Number 1 priority after arrival: SSN

Here is information on how to obtain your social security card after two weeks from your arrival into the United States.

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER


You will need a SSN in order to register for classes at a college, open a bank account, apply for a driver’s license etc.

 

To apply for a Social Security number:

 

·    Visit one of the SS offices (to locate one nearest you go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/locator  and enter your zip code)

 

·    Complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5)

 

·    Provide original documents showing your age, identity and lawful noncitizen status (your passport, visa, and the ‘letter of good standing’)

You can call for an appointment or to speak to a service representative between the hours of 7am and 7pm on business days. The lines are busiest early in the week and early in the month so, if your business can wait, it’s best to call at other times or book an appointment on-line.
